Spiderman, Stewardship, and School Supplies

With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility

This handwritten letter on yellow paper reads "Dear Board, In R.E. we are learning about spiderman. Spiderman is a community helper. We are trying to be community helpers as well. We have some suggestions for improvement at the church. We think some plants and paint would brighten up the church. The carpets need deep cleaning. In our classrooms, we need new dry erase markers, more decorations, and our basic classroom supplies (markers, glue, stickers, pencils, erasers, colored pencils). From, Chloe, Lily, Teddy, Rye Rendon."

About a month ago, our 1st – 5th grade class wrote a letter to the Board as part of their lesson on spiderman and responsibility.  About two weeks ago, I had the privilege of sharing what they wrote with the Board.  And, today, I share it with you.  You can see their letter, and drawing of spiderman, pictured here.

I know the Board is already crafting its own reply to the children (Our Board president has discussed visiting the classroom one upcoming Sunday).  However, I want to make it known now, that our children’s wishes have not been ignored. As you can see, the last line of the letter asks for new supplies, and these have been purchased!  Starting March 12th, both the Infant – Kindergarten class, and the 1st – 5th grade class will have new markers, glue, scissors, pencils, erasers, colored pencils, crayons, tape, etc.

As we move into March, and begin our Stewardship season, I invite you to consider everything it takes to run a church, and the meaning of that word – ‘responsibility.’ What are the responsibilities of a church when caring for its members? What are the responsibilities of those members when caring for their church?
