FIRST CHURCH ADOPTS 8TH PRINCIPLE

First Unitarian Church of Cincinnati became the 249th UU congregation in the nation to adopt the 8th Principle. The congregation on May 21, 2023, unanimously voted, “First Unitarian Church of Cincinnati, as a member congregation of the Unitarian Universalist Association, adopts the 8th Principle to covenant to affirm and promote journeying toward spiritual wholeness by working to build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community that by our actions accountably dismantles racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.”

All congregations belonging to the Unitarian Universalist Association affirm and promote Seven Principles, which we hold as strong values and moral guides. First Unitarian Church of Cincinnati also adopted an 8th Principle, specific to our congregation, that affirms our legacy of building a diverse multicultural Beloved Community to dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.

The 8th Principle reads, “

  • First-Cincinnati adds 8th Principle to typical Seven Principles
  • 1st Principle: The inherent worth and dignity of every person.
  • 2nd Principle: Justice, equity and compassion in human relations.
  • 3rd Principle: Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations.
  • 4th Principle: A free and responsible search for truth and meaning.
  • 5th Principle: The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large.
  • 6th Principle: The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all.
  • 7th Principle: Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.
  • 8th Principle specific to First Unitarian Church of Cincinnati: Build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community that by our actions accountably dismantles racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.
