Social Justice/Public Witness calendar – PRIDE edition

Monday, celebrate Juneteenth

Monday, celebrate Juneteenth with strong energy and vibration! Join us at Lost & Found, 22 E 14th St, 45202 for an all-black house DJ extravaganza. We are going to celebrate the ending of slavery in the United States by playing the most free music created by black and queer folk; Rah D, Jesse James, and Bryston Bryant will be our vibe leaders. There will be an abundance of deep cuts that will rock the house and make you want to move. Pata Roja will provide food. $10 donation supports the artists; register via Eventbrite here

Tuesday

You can view the movie Between Mercy and Me, which was written and filmed in Cincinnati and addresses having healthy conversations about race. It will be screened at 4 area cinemas: AMC Newport on the Levee 20, Cinemark Western Hills 14, Milford 16 and Regal Deerfield Towne Center Stadium 16. The Milford showing is at 7; check with your local cinema for show times.

Thursday

The PRIDE celebration is this weekend! Thursday at 6:30, there will be a Pride Multifaith Celebration at Trinity Episcopal Church, 326 Madison Ave, Covington, KY 41011. Saturday, the parade steps off at 11; wear a yellow Side With Love t-shirt (order from UUA here) and look for the float with a huge flaming chalice. You can help people learn about Unitarian Universalism by staffing UU Council’s booth at Sawyer Point between 9 am and 8 pm. Sign up for setting up, staffing or breaking down the booth at Sign-Up Genius. For more information on working at the UU information booth, contact MJ Pierson at 513-258-4784. For questions specific to First Church, contact Opening Hearts coordinator Trish Hart by email. Complete festival information here.

The Ohio Senate & The Biennial Budget

The Ohio Senate recently released their first changes to the biennial budget and you probably will not be shocked to learn that they are intent on gutting housing programs as well as the food security program mentioned last week. They plan to slash the budget for Healthy Beginnings at Home but this is not yet set in stone. Please reach out to your legislators – these talking points from the Coalition on Homelessness and Housing in Ohio are useful. Remind them that the governor promised support for families in Ohio and these are a step in the WRONG direction…

You can also write members of the Senate Finance Committee to advocate for funding for Advance Peace that heals the ravages of gun violence in some of our poorest and most crime ridden neighborhoods in Cincinnati.  Talking point: Community Violence Intervention is a cost-effective strategy (ROI 20:1) that supports healthy, suitable, and highly credible messengers to reach out to those most disconnected from home, family, and God, those who currently know nothing but violence and are in dire need of hope and redemption. Please ask Ohio senators to support Sen. Ingram’s amendment to fund their work that builds on decades of church and youth-focused community building nonprofit organizations. Email Carole Womeldorf for more information.
