This is First Unitarian Church's 16th Annual Rev. W.H.G. and Beulah Carter Sunday. Guest speaker is Starita Smith Ph.D., Carter’s great granddaughter, who accepted the apology from First Unitarian Church and The Gathering at Northern Hills Unitarian Universalist Community (GNH) in 2001 when we acknowledged that Unitarians had ignored this pioneering black Unitarian minister and his West End church. Dr. Smith challenged us then to “go beyond the comfortable friendships you have with your black Unitarian friends and attempt to bring honesty, light and compassion into the thorny arena of race relations beyond the boundaries of your church.” How have we done?
