NOTES
FROM THE DIRECTOR OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION.
Hello everyone,
Summer is in full force.
I hope you have some vacation scheduled. And I hope you plan on
spending it with those you love the most!
If your a first time
visitor to First Church and are curious about our Sunday school program,
make sure to look at our prospectus for
information on our curriculum. Look below for important updates, UU
centered activities for children, and to see what your child will be doing
this coming Sunday.
Always,
Meredith Plummer
Director of Religious Education
P.S. The distribution of "Taking It Home" sheets
will suspend for the summer. Look for them at the beginning of the
next church year.

UPCOMING
RE EVENTS!
Sunday,
August 22 @ 11am - 12pm
Volunteer Training:
If you are a member of a volunteer team this coming semester, please join me
and your fellow team members on this day to set your schedule, meet your
cooperating teacher, and learn what it means to be an assistant. If
you cannot make it on this day, an alternative training will be set for
Sunday, August 29 @ 11am.

IMPORTANT RE ANNOUNCEMENT!
Look, on the kiosk!
On May 30 all of our children honored Memorial Day by creating a pinwheel.
On each pinwheel were writings or drawings about one of our fallen soldiers,
American, or the importance of Peace. When they were finished, they placed
their pinwheels out in our mulch until class was over. Come view their 15
minute memorial at the religious education kiosk, located in the lobby, by
the literature.
Congratulations Seniors!
On May 23 we celebrated our seniors’ graduations. Afterwards several of our
members asked why our seniors were not presented with copies of The Prophet.
To be honest, I was unaware of this tradition. However, I wanted to let
everyone know that copies of The Prophet have been sent out to all our
graduation seniors. Congratulations class of 2010!
Recruiting Starts this Month
Parents, you should be expecting a call from one of our recruiters by the
middle of August. We are looking for 20 individuals who can make up 5
volunteering teams. Remember, we are changing our method of volunteering
this year. All volunteers for the Fall semester will be expected to attend
the volunteer training and commit to 8 time slots from September through
January. Schedules are flexible and we won’t ask you to volunteer on a
volunteer team for (hopefully) 2 years.
PJ's and Stuffed Animals, What could be Better?
On August 22 Sharon will be preaching a sermon on creativity. I know there
is no better way to get my creative juices flowing than by being relaxed.
Therefore, on August 22, we are asking all children and youth to come to
church as relaxed as possible – in their PJ’s, and with their Stuffed
Animals. I’ll be here in my pajama’s, carrying my cuddle toy, will you?

WHAT'S
MY KID LEARNING THIS SUNDAY, ANYWAY?
7/25
PreK: The book for today is Great Day for
Up. The students will play the Up-Down game and will take a
different perspective on their world by "looking up."
K-5th: In this lesson, the K-5th graders will
learn the Hindu creation story. They'll center their selves and create
a replica of the universe by creating a Mandela.
Jr. and Sr. High: This week the Jr. and Sr.
High will be watching "Bedazzled." The protagonist of this movie,
Elliot Richards (played by Brendan Fraser), is a socially awkward, love
struck dork. Elliot makes a deal with the devil in order to gain the
perfect life. But, like many stories of this nature, his perfect life
turns out to be not so perfect at all. Throughout the movie the line
between good and evil is blurred, and our youth will have some time to
contemplate the true nature of Good V. Evil.
